"There are many sounds in Lauren Turner's Shape Note Singing and the notes played are precise and unnamable, the questions holy and vast. Turner gives us vision; a body of work that recognizes the possibilities of listening when we relinquish control. These poems reverberate themes of deep attention and use, improvisation and devotion. Shape Note Singing throbs with the "big love" that beats and echoes through the halls inside each of us. Turner writes, "When we listen well, we amuse ourselves with what harmonies arise and cohere-" This chapbook teaches us how to stop and flow, how to locate that active listening. Lauren Turner makes more room for sound in this wildly gorgeous songbook."

About the Author
Turner, Lauren: - Lauren Turner is a multidisciplinary artist in Nashville, TN where she plays music solo (Lou Turner) and in the band Styrofoam Winos. Her music occupies the singer-songwriter tradition informed by an oddball cast of influences, ranging from various folk traditions, post-punk, and free improvisation. Her newest record Songs for John Venn (released in April via SPINSTER) was called quietly imaginative by NPR and some kind of low-key masterpiece by Aquarium Drunkard. Shape Note Singing is Turner's debut chapbook of poems and an essay, forthcoming from Vegetarian Alcoholic Press in January 2021. Her poems and essays have appeared in Cathexis Northwest Press, Angel City Review, Image Journal's Good Letters blog, Waxing & Waning Literary Journal, and more. Her interviews and reviews have appeared in Chapter 16, Aquarium Drunkard, Women's Review of Books, and The East Nashvillian. She also serves as a blog editor for freeform community radio station WXNA FM, where she hosts her literary program, The Crack In Everything.
