This exciting new regional college and university guidebook breaks the mold. It speaks directly to today's high school students who have a substantially different perspective on college and career options than prior generations.
Offered as a Guided Exploration of the higher education options and opportunities in the Pacific Northwest, it emphasizes institutions and programs that are innovative, inclusive, and accessible. It is openly biased in favor of experiential and place-based learning, interdisciplinary research-based education, and opportunities for career-focused training beyond the classroom.
As a full-color publication, the guide is designed to invite all college-aspiring high school students, their parents, and counselors to discover the wide range of higher education experiences available in this astonishingly beautiful and ecologically fascinating bioregion of the North American continent. Curious readers will find detailed Profiles of Pacific Northwest private and public colleges and universities located across six states and British Columbia. Each Profile describes the selected institution's Location, Sense of Community, Academics, Student Life Experience, Financial Aid, and Study Away options and is augmented by a Basic Statistics Chart. The Profiles are further enhanced with Highlight segments that add more detailed information about a feature or amenity mentioned in the Profile. For instance, a Highlight might discuss on-campus chapters of professions-related organizations, such as Engineers Without Borders, or address general knowledge questions about critical campus amenities such as Student Support Services.
Readers will also welcome the ten IN FOCUS sections that expand and deepen coverage of the region's colleges, universities, and programs well beyond those profiled. These engaging sections describe a wide variety of innovative and special-interest programs, tuition discounts, rare majors, and other valuable resources available at PNW institutions. Affordable and Equitable Access, LGBTQAI+ Support, Environmental Science studies, Visual and Performing Arts programs, and Residential Community Colleges, are a few of the IN FOCUS section topics. The PNW Guide also includes a practical College Research Workshop to support students' college research and comparison efforts.
The PNW college guide is an ongoing project of Navigations2College, an Oregon non-profit organization. It is inspired by the belief that equitable and inclusive access to higher education and training is a matter of social and economic justice and driven by the need for more comprehensive coverage of PNW higher education options. This refreshing take on a college guidebook not only fills that void but goes well beyond with novel content, exceptional clarity, and strong encouragement for its readers.
