Jamie Aldrich has never heard of the Osage Reign of Terror, the horrible kidnappings and murders of the oil-rich members of the Osage Tribe in the 1920s, the FBI's first case. All that changes when she returns to Pawhuska, Oklahoma after a thirty-year absence to check on her great aunt Elizabeth.

Soon after her arrival, Elizabeth tells Jamie, "my whole life has been a sham." Minutes later, her aunt lies in a coma, the victim of an attack.
