But when a hitchhiking trip went wrong, he soon found himself in the midst of a complete psychotic break, believing that God was speaking to him and that it was his destiny to save the world. He ended up in a psych ward, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through his faith in God and his willingness to reach out for help, Jake recovered, but recovery was its own long and difficult road.
