The definitive account of German graphic designer Bernhard, who is heralded as the father of the sachplakat, or "object poster"
The German artist and designer Lucian Bernhard (1883-1972) was one of the great pioneers of graphic design. In a career spanning nearly five decades across Berlin and New York, Bernhard laid the basis for a new language of form and communication. His brilliant posters, advertisements, book designs and typefaces forged the look of the 20th century and continue to inspire his successors in the 21st.
Lucian Bernhard is the first volume dedicated to the rigorous exploration of Bernhard's legacy. Lavishly illustrated, the book features five chapters that chart the evolution of his life and career, from "changeling" to "advocate" to "adman." Acclaimed design historian Christopher Long guides the reader on this journey, revealing new truths and exploding old myths along the way. Rounding out this biographical account are plates showcasing select typefaces, books, magazines and pamphlets designed by Bernhard.
Christopher Long is a professor and chair of history/theory in the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.
